1. Year and place of birth

Alexander Buchkuri was born in c. Buturlinovka of Voronezh province 18 November 1870 of the year. His father was a Taganrog merchant, Greek Turkish citizenship. The future artist became interested in drawing in early childhood, redrawing pictures from books. We should pay tribute to the mother of Alexander Alexandrovich and his stepfather for their support in this direction.. He grew, carefully observing ordinary people and village life in general. In the future, the topic of peasants and their life, customs will become the main.

2. Mature solution. Petersburg

For further training in painting in St. Petersburg, Buchkuri decided only to 28 years. All this time he studied at the Voronezh art school under the guidance of L.G. Solovyov.. The same artist, who painted the painting “Monks (We did not go there)”, with which, by the way, there is still confusion: At first, among the people to her firmly entrenched “his” name – "Swam", and secondly, the authorship of the work is for some reason attributed to AND. E. Repin.

Upon arrival in St. Petersburg, Buchkuri went to a meeting with I. E. Repin, to resolve the issue of the prospects of studying with a famous artist. He brought some sketches with him to watch., but the work did not appeal to Repin at all. Obviously, natural modesty prevailed, and a picture of a more worthy specimen, which Buchkuri had at that time, – "Self-portrait in a Fool's Cap" (1898) – he did not consider it necessary to demonstrate to the master. Let it be written in an imitative manner to Dutch portrait painters of the 17th century., nevertheless, the novice artist then still had something to surprise the professional. Saved the situation, which was not in favor of Buchkuri, sketch of architecture elements, made by him upon arrival in Petersburg. Repin's experienced gaze nevertheless found, that the young man is not devoid of potential. From October 1899 of the year, Buchkuri begins to attend classes at the Higher Art School of the Academy in the workshop of Repin I. E.

3. Study. The main theme in creativity

During his studies, Buchkuri set to work on the painting, later called "Death of the Pretender". This work became competitive, with it he earned himself the title of artist.

Popular unrest theme, taken as a basis, turned out to be very relevant for Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century. At one time, the painting was sold to Switzerland, now her fate is not unknown. You can see the canvas only in this version.:

Gradually “folk” the topic will thoroughly enter into the work of Buchkuri and this is not surprising. After all, the artist was familiar with the peasant life firsthand, the troubles of the peasants always evoked sympathy in him. Interest in simple, without accumulation, natural, life, perhaps, main motive, characterizing the creativity of Buchkuri throughout his life.

Perhaps, only the painting "Christmas Market" stands out from the rest of the works, and looks more like a New Year's postcard.

4. Alexander Buchkuri and peasant women

A significant place in the work of Alexander Buchkuri is occupied by portraits of peasant women, for which he can rightfully be called the "singer of Russian women". The artist, as it were, studies the types of Russian women, their character, pays attention to the details of the costume, mood.

5. Other paintings

At first glance it seems, that the poor decoration of the peasants testifies to the simplicity and uncomplicatedness of their life, especially against the background of sophistication and outward gloss of people of the privileged class. Actually, the apparent simplicity hides the same sensuality, the same complexity of the relationship, the same complex characters, it's worse.

The painting "Funeral" was written in 1905 year. In the center of the canvas are faceless figures of the procession participants. Do not recognize us and who is seen off on their last journey. Is it a disease, is it hungry, bloody events in a rebellious country, failures in the Russo-Japanese War, but you never know reasons for grief among the Russian people… just death, as part of a person's life.

IN 1907 Alexander Buchkuri returned to Voronezh, where with 1909 year began to teach at the local drawing school, then at the Free Art Workshops, at the Art and Industrial Art School.

“Draw simply, approaching with attention and without memorization to each drawing, as if you never painted, don't be proud, don't be afraid to humiliate yourself to that, to convey that, what is in nature, work tirelessly and persistently day in and day out and not for glory or self-interest. Trust yourself, your feelings, their actions, your true will not deceive you, but will give you the opportunity to show your uniqueness, maybe, and will leave a mark on history” – Buchkuri spoke to his students.

IN 1912 Buchkuri completed work on the painting "Wedding Train". This one of the strongest pictures makes us reconsider the views that have become familiar to us on some things.. So, traditionally, wedding celebrations are perceived by us as an occasion for joy and fun. But who said, what a wedding – it's fun? Who has fun?

Pretty, but at one time the painting was not accepted by the art council “In the circus”. The artist had to put it up for sale for debts. Fortunately, bought it was a museum of fine arts, and therefore miraculously survived.

Well, perhaps, one of the most complex themes in the work of Alexander Buchkuri was the painting "Conclusion". It depicts a scene of punishment by a husband's wife. In the common people, such an action was called "conclusion". Suspected of cheating on his wife, her husband could chase her away in disgrace, naked and tied to a horse, all over the village amid the hooting of the crowd. It was this shameful wild custom that the artist captured. It took a very long time to work on the painting., and according to experts, and remained unfinished due to the impressive size, in particular.

During the Great Patriotic War, the artist died at the hands of the fascist invaders. According to eyewitnesses, Alexander Alekseevich with his wife (also an artist) Vassa Iosifovna Epifanova, among other residents of Voronezh, were shot in the summer 1942 of the year.

Today in Voronezh one of the city streets, not far from that place, where did the artist live, named after him. A number of Buchkuri's paintings can be seen in the Museum named after. Kramsky.
